What do you picture when you say the word “intuition”? Do you see someone sitting in lotus position, Third Eye blazing? Is it a “That’s So Raven” gasp and eye-zoom? How about a wise person in robes reading tea leaves?
Let’s start with the textbook definition:
in·tu·i·tion
”The ability to understand something immediately without the need for conscious reasoning.”
The conscious part is important, since it’s only before or in-between conscious thought that intuition can shine. That’s because it has to be felt, not understood. Intuition is a feeling, requiring you to be connected to your center of all things feels - the Heart. It’s through this centermost chakra that we connect with Divinity (also called “Source”, “Creator”, “God”, etc) and Divine Love. Yes, the Third Eye is where your psychic abilities lie. Yes, the Crown is your spiritual antenna. It’s only when we enter the Heart’s green and pink light that we’re able to access messages and guidance from the Divine.
This concept of Heart Connection can be found in Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and many other major religions and spiritual schools. Native Americans used drums to emulate the sound of a heartbeat for sacred ceremonies and journeying; while Ancient Egyptians believed the Heart was weighed and judged by Ma’at’s Feather.
Now let’s be real: Earth can be quite triflin’ at times. Hardships and harsh energies can pull us out of the Heart and into the Mind: making us question our path, doubt ourselves, and fill our heads with confusion. Unresolved emotions and unhealed trauma can create blockages in this energetic center, making it hard to feel “tapped in” or led by our guides. If you find yourself here, don’t feel bad. Remember we’re all human and meant to fall off the trail from time to time. The good thing is reconnecting is as simple as dropping your focus back into your body and feeling your way forward.
Ways to Connect with your Heart Space
- The most simple (and most challenging) way: sitting with your emotions. Feeling what you feel without judgement is key. If you’ve recently gone through a heartbreak or something emotional, this method could be more difficult. Remember to give yourself the needed space and grace; seek professional help if the emotional load is too much to bare. (After all, therapy is a form of shadowwork).
- Dancing or listening to drums are great methods for getting back into your body and sensual side. For added effect, do this under a full moon.
- Working with crystals like Rose Quartz, Kunzite, or Amazonite can help connect and/or heal the Heart Space.
- Herbs like Rosemary and Rose Petals are great for working with the Heart.
- Wearing Pink, Green, or Red.
Heart Meditation
Find a comfortable position to sit or lay with your back straight. Focus on your breath, becoming aware of your whole body. Once you’re relaxed start to imagine you’re journeying into your Heart: a complete inner-world that can be as simple as a meadow or as elaborate as a castle or city. Let the image come to you.
In the center of your Heart Space, imagine there’s a sacred place - a castle, temple, sacred grove, etc. Green, terrestrial light flows up from below it while a white or pink, Divine light pours down from above. Enter, finding a throne made of green and pink fabrics. Take your seat. Allow the connection of both Earth and Divine energy to fill your Heart: shining light on any emotions or areas that need your attention.
When you’re done, thank the energies present and step outside of your temple. Say goodbye to your Heart Space, knowing you’re leaving it more energized, clear, and connected than when you arrived. Imagine you are traveling back out to your physical body. Close out by pressing both hands to your chest and bowing your head.
